Dissect for Google Drive

Connect Google Drive once. Search in Dissect for what's inside a Doc, a Sheet or a PDF, and open it in Drive. Import your whole Drive, or search and pick files and folders to read in full. A folder brings everything inside it, and new files you add to it later come in too. Everything else is still listed by name.

1. How it works

Connect on Google Drive's own screen

You sign in with Google Drive, not with Dissect, and allow it to read. Dissect never sees your password.

2. ## Everything, or choose files and folders

Import your whole Drive, or search and pick files and folders. A folder brings everything inside it, and new files you add to it later come in too.

3. ## Search in Dissect, open where it lives

Your files turn up in Dissect search under "In your apps", next to your saves. Tap one and it opens in Google Drive.

What it reads

What Dissect reads in Google Drive

Dissect keeps the text and a link, never a copy of the file, and checks for changes about every six hours.

  • ### Google Docs, Sheets and Slides

Read as text, so a line from the middle of a document still finds it.

  • ### PDF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Plus text, Markdown, CSV and OpenDocument files, up to 10 MB each.

  • ### Photos, videos and other files

Listed by name, so you can still find them and open them in Drive.

What it never does

Read only, and yours to switch off

  • ### Never writes

Dissect never edits, moves, posts or deletes anything in Google Drive.

  • ### Not in your Library

Your files stay in Google Drive. They don't use your saves or your storage.

  • ### Forgets on disconnect

Disconnect from Connected apps and Dissect forgets everything it read.

  • ### Search the rest, if you want

An optional switch also asks Google Drive about files you didn't import, each with an Import button.

Common questions

Does Dissect change anything in my Drive?

No. Dissect only reads. It never edits, moves, shares or deletes a file, and you can disconnect at any time.

Can I connect only some folders?

Yes. Pick files and folders after connecting, with search. A folder brings everything inside it and keeps up as you add files.

Do my files go into my Library?

No. They stay in Drive. Dissect keeps their text and a link, not the files, so they don't use your saves or storage. They show up in search under "In your apps".

Can I search files I didn't import?

Yes, with "Search the rest of Drive" switched on. Drive searches inside those files too, and each result has an Import button.

How fresh is it?

Dissect checks for changes about every six hours, and you can press Check for changes any time. Files you delete or move out disappear from Dissect too.

Which plan is it on?
